Hawker 850XP: The Ultimate Mid-Size Business Jet Experience

The Hawker 850XP stands as a testament to the evolution of mid-size twinjet corporate aircraft. Originating from the British Aerospace 125 lineage, it has been meticulously crafted and assembled by the renowned Hawker Beechcraft.

Historical Roots

The journey of the Hawker 850XP began with the British Aerospace (BAe) board’s decision in April 1981 to enhance the British Aerospace 125-700 series. By May 1983, the newly designed aircraft took its maiden flight. The BAe 125-800 series introduced several modifications, including a redesigned cockpit windscreen, a modified rear fuselage fairing, and uprated Garrett TFE731-5R-1H engines. These changes not only improved the aircraft’s aesthetics but also its aerodynamic efficiency.

Hawker 850XP Evolution and Acquisition

Raytheon, after acquiring Beech Aircraft Corporation, took over BAe Corporate Jets in 1994, leading to the formation of Raytheon Aircraft. This entity underwent another transformation in March 2007 when Raytheon divested its aircraft manufacturing business to Hawker Beechcraft Corp.

Hawker 850XP: A Class Apart

The Hawker 850XP was certified for operation in March 2006. While it shares similarities with the 800XP, the 850XP boasts of winglets that extend its operating range by 100 nautical miles. Additionally, it features upgraded avionics and a revamped interior, making it a favorite among business jet aficionados. The 850XP fills the void left by the Hawker 1000, ensuring that the legacy of high-quality mid-size jets continues.

Notable Variants

Hawker 750

This variant is a cost-effective, lightweight, and shorter-range version of the 800XP. It competes fiercely with the Citation XLS and Learjet 60 in the market.

Hawker 900XP

Introduced with new Honeywell TFE731-50BR engines, the 900XP offers an increased range, making it a preferred choice for longer journeys.

End of an Era

Despite the success and acclaim of the Hawker series, the 2013 bankruptcy of Hawker Beechcraft marked the end of its production. However, the designs continue to receive support for parts, ensuring that the Hawker 850XP and its siblings remain operational and cherished.

Hawker 850XP Design and Manufacturing

The Hawker 800, including the 850XP, follows a modular design approach. Sub-assemblies are crafted away from the final assembly point. The fuselage sections, wings, and control surfaces undergo partial fitting in the UK before being shipped to Hawker Beechcraft’s main manufacturing site in Wichita, Kansas for final assembly and testing.

Military Adaptations

While the Hawker series primarily serves the corporate world, it has also found its way into military applications. Japan, for instance, employs a maritime search and rescue variant of the Hawker 800, designated as the U-125A. This variant is equipped with advanced observation windows, search radars, and thermal imaging equipment, making it apt for its mission.

Hawker 850XP Legacy in Numbers

From its inception, the Hawker series has seen significant sales. The 125-800 series, in particular, witnessed the sale of its 500th airframe nineteen years after the first BAe 125 flight. In contrast, the 800 series reached its 200th sale in just over five years, highlighting its immense popularity.

The Hawker 850XP is more than just an aircraft. It embodies decades of innovation, commitment, and passion. As it cruises in the skies, it carries with it a rich history and the promise of unmatched luxury and performance.
